Gary Player says he's "never seen anything like" US Open course

Nine time major winner Gary Player has been highly critical of conditions at the US Open at Chambers Bay.

Multiple major winner Gary Player says he's "never seen anything like" the US Open course at Chambers Bay, as conditions prove challenging for the world's best golfers.

The public course in the state of Washington on the USA's west coast, only opened in 2007 and formerly a sand and gravel mine, has attracted criticism from players all week.

Masters champion Jordan Spieth was heavily critical of the 18th hole, which which was a par five on Thursday and par four on Friday, alternating with the first, which became par five.

Player has also added his voice to the criticism.

"I've never seen anything like this in my 63 years as a professional golfer", he said.

"Don't anybody ever compare the US Open with the Open championship of Britain there's absolutely no comparison.

"I was watching Rory McIlroy hit a bunker shot. He hit a beautiful shot and it went 100 feet past the hole.

"This is a public golf course. I can tell you if a man has an eight handicap if he can break 100 I will eat the ball off these tees."
