England would have lost the 2005 Ashes if Ricky Ponting had decided to bat first at Edgbaston, rather than bowl, according to England captain Michael Vaughan.

Ponting infamously decided to bowl having won the toss, despite having lost Glenn McGrath in the warm-up due to injury. England won the match by two runs and Ponting's decision led to a public argument with spinner Shane Warne ahead of play.

"I couldn't believe what he had said," Vaughan recalls on what happened at the toss.

"If he had batted on that day we wouldn't have won the Ashes."
