Andrew Carnegie married the daughter of a New York merchant, Louise Whitfield. They honeymooned in Scotland where Louise fell in love with the country. Following the birth of their daughter, she asked Andrew to buy them a summer home in the Highlands. They bought Skibo Castle in Dornoch and spent huge sums of money renovating it which boosted the local economy.
