Pyongyang student: Life in North Korea 'not so black and white'
A student from Manchester who spent a semester studying in North Korea says life there "is not so black and white as the media portrays it."
18-year-old Alessandro Ford spent a semester at the Kim il Sung University in Pyongyang studying Korean.
"At first glance the citizens there have the same freedoms as you or I," said Ford. "They can go where they want. But they also have lots of restrictions that we wouldn't think of."
"If you wanted to visit a relative out in the country you would have to get a permit. If you want to get a car, you have to apply for one from the government, who may or may not decide that you deserve one," he added.
