Christian Mason: Open to Infinity - a Grain of Sand
With the London Sinfonietta conducted by Thierry Fischer. Christian Mason was mentored by Boulez at the Lucerne Festival Academy and has already written a work for him. The title explores what Boulez as a figure means to Mason, as 鈥榓n archetype and a master of fine details鈥. 鈥楽omeone once told me that 鈥渢ime doesn鈥檛 exist for Boulez any more鈥,鈥 he says. 鈥業 liked that idea.鈥 He also liked and remembered the Blake poem, 鈥楾o see a World in a Grain of Sand鈥. 鈥業t connected the Boulezian ideas of detail, precision and eternity.鈥 Mason鈥檚 orchestration echoes the piano, harp, percussion trio in Boulez鈥檚 Sur incises, with each instrumental family from the chamber orchestra providing a background colour. 鈥楿sually I add lots of unusual instruments. With this one I wanted purity and primary colours.鈥
