Are benefit sanctions unfair?
Benefit sanctions were introduced by the government to encourage people into work. Under the system people can lose benefits for anywhere between a few weeks and three years if they fail to meet the government's requirements for jobseekers. Many claim it can be unfair and penalise the most vulnerable in society. One Labour MP told the programme she's taking cases to the Parliamentary Ombudsman. The Department of Work and Pensions say the vast majority of those on benefits play by the rules and the number of sanctions is falling.
