The silver token helping to keep a railway line safe
A token system is helping to keep train passengers safe on a rural railway line in India.
Before a train can travel along the single track running between Palasdari, 70km east of Mumbai, to Khopoli the driver must be given a silver ball from a machine which acts as a permit to travel.
A corresponding machine at the partner station signals the line is busy. No more tokens can be issued from either machine and no further trains can travel along the single track until the train reaches the partner station.
John Sergeant finds out more.
