Piers: Saving an icon of the British seaside
In their Victorian heyday, piers were fashionable, grand structures designed to allow access to healthy sea air and amusements - but now, many of the 57 remaining in England, Wales and Scotland are shadows of their former selves. That could be set to change though - the government is offering a 拢3m seaside regeneration fund and a number of piers are bidding for some of the money.
