Labour MP: I'll rebel on Syria vote

Labour MP Mike Gapes said he is prepared to rebel against the party leadership over UK air strikes in Syria.

The Ilford South MP said he would "vote according to my conscience and my beliefs" and "do what is right for my country".

He said the government had a "perfectly legitimate reason" to extend the bombing campaign in Iraq over the border in to Syria, to combat the so-called Islamic State group.

Jeremy Corbyn has faced criticism from many of his own MPs for his refusal to back further UK involvement in the war-torn country. He has said he will not support air strikes without a United Nations resolution.
