Why has Theresa May lasted so long as home secretary?

Theresa May is now the longest-serving home secretary since Henry Matthews in 1892, overtaking Rab Butler's 2,007 day stint under Harold Macmillan.

She has survived what is meant to be one of the trickiest jobs in the cabinet, and is spoken of as a possible contender for next Conservative leader.
