'He left the house - I've never heard from my child since'
There are currently more than 130,000 people recorded as missing by police, according to new figures seen by the Victoria Derbyshire programme.
Most of those who disappear will return home quickly, normally within a week, but a small proportion - around 1% - are still not found a year later.
It is thought there are 15,000 families in the UK who are still trying to find their loved ones more than 12 months after they first vanished.
Jim Reed has been speaking to some of them.
