Geysir was written in 1961, towards the end of Icelandic composer Jón Leifs’ life. The composer never heard a performance of his graphic tone-poem depicting the underground volcanic upheavals which lead to the unpredictable and periodic eruptions from the waterspouts found in Iceland, notably the Great Geysir and its neighbour, Strokkur.
