Minister Brandon Lewis on housing policy

The government will announce by the autumn the "sink" estates identified for demolition and regeneration in England, Housing minister Brandon Lewis has said.

David Cameron has said he wants to demolish estates "where people can feel trapped in poverty" and "rebuild houses people feel they can have a future in".

Pressed over the plans on the Daily Politics, Mr Lewis could not give a timetable for the work, saying it "will depend on what the local areas want to do". He said the government did not want to "impose" the changes and would work with local authorities and communities.

He said tenants would have a "guaranteed right" to return to their area after the regeneration work, but he did not rule out the use of compulsory purchase orders to clear the estates for development.

Mr Lewis was joined in the studio by guest of the day Leanne Wood, leader of Plaid Cymru.
