President of Mauritius: 'I've come here with an agenda'
In Mauritius the role of president is largely ceremonial, with one exception - that they are regarded as the guardian of the constitution, the highest law in the land.
It is for this reason that Ameenah Garib-Fakim was asked to give up her job as a famous scientist, enter politics and take over the presidency. She was not a seasoned politician but a highly-respected academic and considered most likely unbiased when conducting her political duties.
But has it been an easy ride for the first female president of Mauritius?
