Joe Root's dad: 'It can be painful watching'

Two radio presenters in New Zealand have been suspended after they broadcast a phone call from the mum of England cricketer Ben Stokes without telling her.

Deborah Stokes rang Radio Hauraki after hearing Jeremy Wells and Matt Heath criticise her son's showing in England's World Twenty20 final defeat.

Matt Root - father of England star Joe - said it can be "painful" and "a nightmare" watching your children play at such a high level.

"I was unfortunate enough to be Down Under when Joe was dropped during the Ashes series and it's no fun," Root said. "What I can say is that really taught Joe a bit of a lesson and since then he's not looked back."

"Ben will bounce back. He's a talented player and they'll take it as a team. It's a team game," he said.
