The 8 million Uighers are a Turkic Muslim ethnic group mostly living in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China, which was set up in the 1950s and constitutes a 6th of China's landmass. A look at the roots of the separatist movement and why there are currently tensions in the area.
