On 5 June 2007 the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, with the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, arrived at Cardiff Central railway station and drove to the National Assembly for Wales’ Senedd in Cardiff Bay.

They were received by the Presiding Officer, Lord Elis-Thomas, and the First Minister, Rhodri Morgan, as the Queen opened the third session of the Assembly. Her Majesty was received with a gun salute fired from HMS Exeter. It was her fifth visit to the Assembly where extended powers mean laws can be made in Wales, though Parliament will have to agree the area they cover. She told AMs: "The Government of Wales Act opens a new era for devolution".

Later the royal party attended a reception at the National Museum in Cardiff, to mark the centenary of the National Museum of Wales.
