Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot says his team-mate Andros Townsend should go to Euro 2016 as part of Roy Hodgson's England squad.

Townsend has impressed in recent weeks with his displays for Rafa Benitez's relegation-threatened side.

And Elliot, who will miss out on the trip to France with Ireland through injury, believes Townsend has proved his worth.

"I was surprised with how good he is, and he's just going to get better and better," he told George Riley on 5 live Sport.

"I don't see any reason why you wouldn't take him. For England it'd be a massive plus with someone like him in the squad.鈥�
