Security expert praises police for Man Utd evacuation

The former head of the Flying Squad, John O鈥機onnor, has praised the response of the police after Old Trafford had to be evacuated ahead of the game v Bournemouth following the discovery of a suspect package.

A controlled explosion was carried out after two stands - the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and the Stretford End - were evacuated before the final game of the season and sniffer dogs brought in.

Kick-off, due at 15:00 BST, was delayed and shortly afterwards the match was abandoned on police advice.

A bomb disposal team carried out the explosion at about 16:30 BST.

鈥淚t shows the contingency plans work,鈥 O鈥機onnor said.

鈥淭he police are likely to err on the side of caution and I don鈥檛 blame them.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e responding in a way which was admirable,鈥 he added.
