Rio volunteers don't know if they're going to Olympics

A Rio 2016 volunteer says its "bonkers" he's still not got confirmation he's going after organisers tell thousands they may not be needed after all.

People who've volunteered to help at the Rio Olympics say there's huge "doubt" over whether they'll actually be going to the Games because many of them are still waiting to hear if they'll be needed or not.

Ian Kershaw, who is one of those waiting for confirmation, has told 5 live it is "bonkers" they have been left in the dark for so long, as the volunteers don't know whether to book flights and accommodation or not.

An estimated 50 thousand volunteers will work at the Games, which start in just under two months. Lots of volunteers recently received an email from organisers saying despite being "approved" to volunteer, there is now a chance they might not be needed after all.

Rio 2016 has been approached about this issue. They have sent this statement: 'The reason for the email was to make sure everybody had a chance to tell us their situation. It was a request for confirmation that these volunteers are definitely intending to come. The vast majority (95%) of volunteers already have their roles allocated and we are working as fast as we can to allocate the remaining roles. 8,000 volunteers have already participated during the 44 test events held by Rio 2016 over the past year.'
