What is the gig economy?

A growing number of people are trying to supplement their income or offset costs by becoming part of the 'gig economy' - an environment in which temporary positions are common and organisations are employing independent workers for short-term engagements.

Some say it provides flexible hours and alternative incomes, giving people access to goods and services they could not otherwise afford. Others say it is creating an army of low paid people in precarious work who are undercutting existing firms by circumventing tax and regulation.
