Babies born to surrogates are being handed over to their new parents in hospital car parks because of confusion over the law. Campaigners say families are being forced into ''demeaning'' handovers, because NHS staff are worried about being involved in legal disputes.

Amanda Wilson has been a surrogate to six babies, and said: 鈥淥n more than one occasion I鈥檝e had to carry the child outside of the maternity ward in full view 鈥� so they know what鈥檚 going on 鈥� but I can鈥檛 give the baby to the parents until we are within the car park.鈥�

The Department of Health says ''altruistic surrogacy is perfectly legal so it's unacceptable that some families feel they are being forced off NHS premises after the birth of children''.

鈥淚 have people come over and ask if everything is alright because they鈥檝e seen someone take my baby. They are being made to feel like they are doing something wrong, in the eyes of the law it鈥檚 not illegal and they are not doing anything wrong,鈥� added Amanda.
