Dramatic pictures on the front of the Sun newspaper showed of dozens of school pupils brawling on a street in Lewisham, London. When two police officers tried to intervene, they found themselves under attack - one of the officers had to be taken to hospital.

Ken Marsh is chairman of the Met Police Federation, he said: 鈥淭here has been a denigration of how the public recognise police officers 鈥� we serve communities and we don鈥檛 do it by force. There need to be far firmer sanctions in place.鈥�

The Metropolitan Police have called the attack "shocking" and have asked anyone with mobile phone footage of the incident to get in touch with them. They say they're liaising closely with local schools in the investigation.

鈥淭here need to be laws that say things like - for doing that you get 3 months custodial sentence. If that was set in place and the government backed it fully we wouldn鈥檛 see people doing this to police,鈥� added Marsh.
