Christopher de Hamel: 'The elephant was fed on meat and wine'
Christopher de Hamel, Fellow and Librarian of The Parker Library at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, shows Andrew Marr the first picture of an elephant in England. It was drawn by Matthew Paris, the chronicler of St Albans for his Medieval manuscript The Chronica Maiora and depicts an African elephant, housed in the Tower of London in 1255 and fed on meat and wine.
