Many a politician and pundit were shocked last year by the UK's referendum vote to leave the EU, and the election of Donald Trump in the United States.

Neither had been clearly signalled by the opinion polls - but social media analysts at the company Brandseye called both votes correctly- by looking in detail at what millions of people are saying online.

Chief executive, Jean-Pierre Kloppers, spoke to the Westminster Hour about social media in an election campaign and what the year ahead will hold for elections in key European countries like France and Germany.
