Boris Yeltsin's Resignation
On New Year鈥檚 Eve 1999, Russian president Boris Yeltsin shocked the world by resigning during his annual TV address. Less than a decade earlier, Yeltsin had succeeded the last president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev. Yeltsin oversaw a period of huge upheaval following the USSR's collapse.
