Free vote on Parliament restoration

MPs will be given a free vote when the Commons decides on plans for restoration works at the Palace of Westminster, the prime minister has confirmed.

Theresa May was responding to a question from Conservative MP Sir Edward Leigh, who said that MPs should not be spending "billions of pounds worth of expenditure on ourselves".

The project could cost up to 拢4bn and take five to eight years to complete - and could see MPs and peers moving out temporarily.
