Pylon toppled in power line upgrade
The first of 84 pylons redundant because of the Beauly to Denny power line upgrade is toppled near Aviemore.
The final phase of work will begin today to demolish pylons replaced as part of the controversial Beauly to Denny power line upgrade. The new super-line is already transmitting power but work still has to be done to remove the old towers.
Upgrading the power line was a massive undertaking which threw up huge objections. As part of the conditions, power company SSE was obliged to remove the old, smaller towers and perform landscaping. Between Aviemore and Kingussie that involved burying the cables underground.
Much of the removal work has been done along the full route from Beauly near Inverness to Denny by Stirling, with just those in the Cairngorms remaining.
The work is due to be completed by the end of July.
