Armistead Maupin: My family didn't believe in gay people
The American writer Armistead Maupin grew up in North Carolina with a father who he says was racist and homophobic. He spent his youth trying to impress his father, before coming out as gay and embracing a whole new set of values. After 11 novels, mainly in his Tales of the City series, he has written a memoir called Logical Family.
