670 cyclists have received a total of £6.7 million in compensation after suffering injuries caused by potholes since 2013. The cost of repairing roads in England and Wales, including potholes, is estimated to be £9 billion.

Kate Uzzell's husband, Martyn, was thrown into the path of a car whilst cycling. She said: "The area of tarmac round the drain hadn't been filled in. Martyn either hit the defect or swerved to avoid it. He was thrown into the path of a vehicle that was travelling in the same direction and he was killed instantly."

A spokesperson from the Department for Transport said: "Any death on our roads is deeply regrettable. We will do everything we can to make our roads safer for everyone, including cyclists, and will invest £23 billion to improve journeys."
