Why bitter is better for you, but we're growing sweeter food
Our demand for sweetness in fruit and vegetables seems boundless. Sweeter varieties of Brussels sprouts, broccoli and grapefruit have appeared on the shelves, as more bitter varieties become harder to find. You can now buy many different types of tomatoes sweeter than they鈥檝e ever been. A new variety of beefsteak tomato has just been developed, which claims to be three times sweeter than a traditional beef tomato. Xanthe Clay is the food columnist for the Telegraph. She explains to Shari Vahl what's going on.
