Steve and Gill - The Joy of Nursing

A mother and son both chose nursing as their career

Steve was brought up in Essex with his sister and mum Gill and dad. A combination of epilepsy and an unhelpful attitude from his school meant Steve left with no qualifications. Initially studying leisure and tourism at college, on a family holiday to the Isle of Wight, Steve decided as 'an act of rebellion' to study healthcare - not to follow his mum's footsteps into nursing per se, but to show her he too could do the courses she was doing. He discovered he enjoyed caring for people and got a buzz from helping them. Starting as a healthcare assistant, and encouraged by his now wife Jess, Steve went to university - the first in the family - and studied nursing. He is now a senior staff nurse in intensive care - and a clinical educator. By contrast, Gill was the eldest of 3 sisters and encouraged by her career minded father to go into nursing after school. A nurse for life, she retired in May 2017, joining her husband of 46 years who has also retired from hospital work. During their conversation they discuss their love of nursing and the joy of having someone who understands the highs and lows.
