Free From: why most of it was already free
Free From food and drink is big business in the UK now. According to Kantar Worldpanel it鈥檚 a rapidly expanding market, growing by more than a third in 2017 alone. In 2017, Free From sales were worth 拢1.5 billion, whilst we spent 拢2 billion on organics. What鈥檚 clear is that more people are buying Free From than strictly need it for medical reasons. Only around one in 100 people is a coeliac and five in 100 are lactose intolerant. The sales figures for foods that are being labelled as Free From may have been inflated by the fact that lots of products that never contained gluten or dairy are now being labelled in this way. Winifred Robinson finds out more.
