What can science tell us about heartbreak? Number 1: The pain is physical. Scientists compared the brain activity of people in physical pain from a hot stimulus on their arm, with people who were experiencing emotional pain by looking at a photograph of their ex. They found that the same regions of the brain were activated for physical and emotional pain, lending truth to the idea that rejection hurts. So stop looking at Facebook, it’s not good for you!
Number 2: Heartbreak can be literal ‘broken heart syndrome’ has similar symptoms to a heart attack but instead of being caused by blocked arteries, it’s caused by extreme emotional stress which weakens the heart muscle. The good news is, this is an extremely rare condition, and most people who get it will make a full recovery. Nonetheless, there is a strong link between depression and cardiovascular disease. If you’re feeling down, talk to somebody.
And Number 3: Mariah Carey is good for you. A recent study measured the physical and emotional responses of people listening to cheesy heartbreak songs. They concluded that the chorus - and the bit leading up to it - have a particularly cathartic effect on the listener. So if you wanna feel better, crank it up.
