For one hundred and fifty years Stranraer was a ferry town, linking Scotland to Northern Ireland. When the last ship left in 2011, it took much of the trade and traffic with it. Facing an uncertain future, many pinned their hopes on leisure and tourism, pointing to the natural arena of the eight-mile-long Loch Ryan.

Well against the odds the town won a bid to host the world championships in Skiffie racing, or coastal rowing. Five people in a small wooden boat fighting waves and wind to be the fastest, and the sport's now become hugely popular in Scotland.
