The religious festival where people hurt themselves

West Bengal in eastern India is one of those areas of the world where scientists estimate that climate change will hit the hardest. Local devotees of the Hindu god Shiva have been praying earnestly for a good harvest. Their spiritual strategy for winning favour with Shiva could appear rather sadistic to western eyes. The pre-harvest folk festival of Gajan marks the end of the Bengali year. The central theme of Gajan is self-inflicted injuries, pain and torture. William Crawley finds out more.
