Revealing the 'true' colours under the ocean

Without specialist lighting, underwater photos can be a bit disappointing: murky, flat and blue. It's all because of the way light hits the water particles.

But Derya Akkaynak, an ocean engineer and diver, has made it her mission to bring back the "true" colours to underwater photography, thanks to a formula and algorithm she developed while studying at the Marine Imagining Lab of the University of Haifa.

Speaking to Newsday's Alan Kasujja, she explained how the system works.
