A review of this symphony's premiere was headlined "Muddle instead of music". Not good news for a composer in Stalin's Russian during the mid-1930s Purges. This work is a thinly veiled musical criticism of the times: people's fear, anger, and doubt. Music like this has the power to condemn but also to threaten the life of its writer!
