With Proud Thames, Elizabeth Maconchy took inspiration from Smetana鈥檚 mighty tone poem Vltava from 'Ma Vlast'. As with Smetana, Maconchy builds her overture from the quiet meanderings on the flutes and clarinets. The tune continues to shift and change in layers of orchestral texture before we arrive in London to multiple triumphant brass entries and a glorious noise. This is a piece which does the Thames proud!
