Symphony No. 6 in D minor, Op 104

Composer: Jean Sibelius
Performers: Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú National Orchestra of Wales
Conductor: Thomas Søndergård
Recording date: 05 December 2014

There is often a stark and cold feel to Sibelius’ works, works which seemed to mirror the beautiful landscapes of his native Finland. This is true of his 6th symphony, which the composer himself compared to taking an ice bath. Compared to other more modern-sounding music of that time (1923), it employs a relatively simple and sparse harmonic language, almost as if Sibelius was determinedly turning his nose up at the less approachable pieces being composed by his contemporaries.
