Premiered in 1902, it was this symphony which consolidated Sibelius鈥� reputation in Finland and abroad. There is undoubtedly a struggle here, 鈥榓 confession of the soul鈥� as Sibelius would later describe it. The music is terse and fragmentary. It is only in the final movement that the earlier themes move toward a triumphant conclusion.
