Can renaming fairness creams stop colourism?
Consumer giant Unilever will change the name of its skin lightening cosmetics range "Fair and Lovely". They said using words like "whitening" on packaging will stop but the products will remain on shop shelves. The move comes after a long campaign for cosmetic firms to drop such branding or stop selling creams altogether. PHD researcher Somia Bibi from the University of Warwick in the UK has been studying the cultural experiences of beauty with a specific focus on skin colour. She shares why the move is not enough.
