Strauss' symphonic poem 'Macbeth', a lesser known work when compared to the rest of Strauss' repertoire, was composed in 1888 and takes its inspiration from Shakespeare's play. Originally it ended with fanfare for Macduff but Strauss revised it later to better reflect the tragic end of Macbeth with a coda in D minor.
