Strauss' most popular and commercially successful opera, the comical 'Der Rosenkavalier' (Knight of the Rose) was composed in 1911 and this suite, taken from the opera, was published in 1945. The music reflects the characters in the original opera and the love triangle they find themselves entangled in, using delightful waltzes and other colourful sections. Listen out for the rude interruption the orchestra makes during a romantic moment between two of the characters in the second act.
