Based on a poem by Otto Bierbaum, this 'welcome vision' or 'pleasant daydream' is the first of a set of five songs composed by Strauss for voice and piano, and later rescored for voice and orchestra. The text speaks of a meadow full of daisies, with figures 'shining among the leaves', and a 'quiet of mind' in a' white house at peace'. Strauss refelcts this ambience beautifully in his shifting of tone, and in the music's placid atmosphere, with its gentle undulating piano arpeggi.
