Prokofiev鈥檚 7th Symphony, composed a year before he died, has been described as the work of a sick man. Prokofiev himself had misgivings about it. Written in a simple style with a young audience in mind, he feared it was perhaps too simple. What we have though is a piece full of poignancy, with a charming feel to the Allegretto 2nd movement, and a great deal of lyrical warmth in the Andante. The large orchestra is used sparingly throughout, but with typical clarity and precision.
