In the 16th century, the word 鈥楶artita鈥� described a single movement in a larger set. By Bach鈥檚 time it was a collective name for a suite made up of varying French dance movements such as the Courante and Sarabande. The 5th Partita shows once again his genius for thematic development, exciting counterpoint and harmonic richness.
