If you are going to set words to music it's hard to pass up Shakespeare. The lyrics come from 'The Tempest' and 'A Midsummer's Night Dream' - both plays filled with sprites such as Puck, Ariel and the magician, Prospero. Vaughan Williams uses close harmonies and extremes of low and high voices to create an other-world of sound and experience: "...a seachange, into something rich and strange".
