Cervantes’ 17th Century epic novel is here turned into a Theme and Variations by Strauss. The theme represents Quixote himself, and the variations the adventures he takes. He is represented by a solo cello – an instrument whose tenor register is apt for tales of heroism – whilst his able sidekick, Sancho Panza, is depicted by a solo viola. It’s a very colourful and comedic work – at one point the wind section portray bleating sheep – but one which shows its doomed hero in a tender light.
