Booker prize nominee freed on bail after Zimbabwe protest

It's a turbulent time in Zimbabwe: doctors are on strike as the number of Covid patients grows, and demonstrations continue against soaring inflation, corruption and poor governance.

One of the demonstrators arrested at the weekend was the internationally known author and Booker prize nominee, Tsitsi Dangarembga. She faces charges of incitement to commit public violence. But despite the government warning people not to protest, she says Zimbabweans must stand up for their rights.

"The space for civil liberties is shrinking in Zimbabwe in an alarming manner... at the moment we have a constitutional right to demonstrate but we still run the risk of being arrested."
